Working with Paintzone
Owner-run
Paintzone is owned and run by Andrei Danu and Dorin Sirbu, who came to painting from architecture and mural work.
Specialty finishes in house
Limewash, Roman clay and tadelakt can go on the same estimate as the paint, from one accent wall to a whole room.
Free written estimates
Every estimate is free and written out, listing the surfaces, the preparation, the products and the price.
Interior painting
During an interior job, we tell you as we move from repairs and primer to the finish coats, and we document the work as it goes. The interior service includes:
- Walls and ceilings
- Doors, window trim, door frames and baseboards
- Crown molding, wainscoting and built-ins
- Drywall repair and wallpaper removal
- Sanding and priming, with oil primer on millwork
- Shop spraying for doors and larger millwork
- Color consultation and color matching
Roughly four in ten Renton homes and apartments were built before 1980, the Census Bureau's survey estimates show. A house from before 1978 is the kind the EPA flags as likely to have lead paint, so we test those before sanding. When lead turns up, we isolate the room and clear the debris under lead-safe procedures. Paintzone is a certified lead-safe firm.
Exterior painting
Washing comes first on an exterior, then scraping. Soft or split boards in the trim, sills or siding get replaced, and bare wood is primed before any color goes on. The exterior service includes:
- Pressure washing and scraping
- Lead testing on houses built before 1978
- Repairs to soft or split trim and siding
- Priming of bare and repaired wood
- Siding, trim, soffits, shutters and doors
- Deck and fence stains, from semi-transparent to solid
- Varnish or clear coat on doors and exterior wood
Why we sometimes wait for the weather
Fresh exterior paint needs at least two days above the dew point to cure, according to Sherwin-Williams, and dew that settles on it sooner can leave stains and weaken the bond. A dry afternoon is not enough on its own, so we look at the forecast for the nights that follow. When they will be cold and damp, we move the date and tell you why. July and August, Seattle's driest months in NOAA's climate records, give the most room.
Commercial painting
We paint restaurants at The Landing and offices and warehouses on the valley floor, inside and out. The commercial service includes:
- Offices, retail stores and shopping centers
- Restaurants, gyms and medical facilities
- Warehouses, museums and religious buildings
- Storefronts and multi-story exteriors
- Wood siding, stucco and metal
- Accent walls and specialty finishes in lobbies
If the building stays in use, the protection and the hours are planned around your business, with after-hours or weekend work when you need it.
Cabinet painting in Renton: kitchens and built-ins
Cabinet painting keeps the layout, the counters and the plumbing you already have. The doors and drawer fronts travel to our finishing shop, where the old finish comes off and the new one is sprayed in a controlled space, away from your rooms. We spray the frames on site, then rehang the doors with their cleaned and polished hardware. The cabinet service includes:
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinets
- Built-ins and laundry, office and garage cabinets
- Existing, new and previously painted cabinets
- Oak, maple, cherry, alder and other woods
- Doors and drawer fronts sprayed in our shop
- High-gloss finishes
The coating is a two-component polyurethane. It cures through a reaction between its two parts, and that reaction is what makes it tough enough for a kitchen.
Specialty finishes
Limewash reads as mineral and slightly cloudy rather than flat painted, and it can run across walls, arches and built-in shelving without a break.
The specialty finishes we offer include:
Limewash
A lime finish for masonry and interior walls that dries matte, with soft variation in color.
Roman clay
A troweled clay plaster, velvety to the touch, with a subtle sheen.
Tadelakt
A Moroccan lime plaster polished with olive oil soap, so it sheds water in showers without grout lines.
Venetian plaster
Thin layers of limestone or marble plaster, burnished to a hard, stone-like surface.
We also do microcement, French wash and high-gloss enamel on doors and millwork.
How we work
Consultation and estimate
We visit, walk the property with you and talk through colors and finishes before we write the estimate.
Preparation
We cover floors, furniture and fixtures with durable masking, then wash, scrape, sand, repair and prime. Work lights show us the dings and cracks that room lighting hides.
Painting
We brush, roll or spray each surface, whichever leaves the better finish. On an exterior we pick the painting days by the forecast, because fresh paint needs dry weather to cure.
Inspection
Before we call the job finished, we check every painted surface against the written scope.
Cleanup
We take down the protection, haul away materials and debris, and leave the property as clean as we found it.
Final walkthrough
We walk through the finished job with you, so you see every room or side of the house before we leave.
Renton painting FAQs
Can we keep using the kitchen while you paint the cabinets?
Yes, for most of the job. Doors and drawer fronts are refinished in our shop, so most of the work happens away from your kitchen, and the frames are finished in place with the room masked.
Do you paint bathroom vanities too?
Yes. Vanities, built-ins and laundry or office cabinets go through the same shop process as kitchen cabinets.
Can limewash go outside as well as inside?
Yes, on masonry. Bare brick and stone soak it up with no primer, while stucco and painted brick need a bonding primer underneath. It is not meant for steps or floors.
Do you remove wallpaper?
Yes. We strip the wallpaper and repair the drywall underneath, then prime before any paint goes on.
What should I do before the painters arrive?
Clear small furniture and personal items from the rooms if you can. Heavy pieces and fixtures can stay, and we cover them.
How do I book an estimate in Renton?
Book through the estimate form, or phone (206) 899-5154. We set a time to see the house, walk through it with you, and follow up with a written estimate covering surfaces, preparation, products and price.
How to check a painting contractor before you sign
Before you hire anyone, including us, check the registration. Washington contractors register with L&I, and you can look up registration status, bond, workers' compensation and any legal actions at Lni.wa.gov/Verify.
Paintzone is on that register as a construction contractor, license number PAINTL*811QD, Washington UBI 604 513 060.
The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule covers housing built before 1978, and anyone paid to disturb paint on those properties has to work for a certified firm. Paintzone is certified to work with lead paint.
